Course Overview
The PADI IDC is split into two key components:
- Assistant Instructor (AI) Course
- Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) Program
Most candidates complete both parts of the IDC and proceed to the Instructor Examination (IE) to earn their full PADI Instructor certification. However, you can choose to complete just the AI course and become a PADI Assistant Instructor, advancing to the OWSI program when you're ready.
Are you already an instructor with another organization? You may be eligible to enroll directly into the OWSI program, which fast-tracks your path to becoming a PADI Instructor by recognizing your prior training.
Course Prerequisites
To enroll in the PADI IDC, you must:
- Be a certified PADI Divemaster for at least six months
- Have a minimum of 60 logged dives (100 dives required to attend the IE)
- Hold current Emergency First Response (CPR and First Aid) certification, valid within the last 24 months
- Provide a medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months
Additionally, you’ll need to become an Emergency First Response Instructor, a certification that you can earn during your IDC training.
