Congratulatins Scuba 2000 Ice Divers!!

February 13 & 14 Bobby Bonner, Mirko Zadravec, Steve Farmer, Asti Livingston, Jory Gibson, Brian Clarke, Dennis Yim & Rick Santilli had an amazing weekend of local diving which concluded with their Padi Ice Diver Certification!
With near perfect winter conditions the group cut out a heart shaped hole (Valentines Day) in the 9" thick ice at Centennial Beach in Barrie and proceeded to each do 3 amazing dives. The weekend was temporarily interrupted while an energetic, unidentified gentleman in his Speedo took a quick dip in our heart shaped hole - 'just to show us that we weren't the only ones having fun'!!
Mike McCabe (our intrepid leader) would like to extend special thanks to Linda, Jenifer, Sergi Zinchenko and Jeff Segal for all their fantastic help.
Great job guys!

Lots of Great Courses - Don't Miss Out!! Print E-mail
training_photo1Each month we offer several interesting scuba courses most of which give you PADI certification. You can complete the academics for each course here (usually 1 or 2 evenings) and then make the dives on your trip whether on a Scuba 2000 trip or on your own vacation. Watch for the following courses: U/W Navigation, U/W Naturalist, Night Diver, Boat Diver, U/W Photographer and lots more. Remember that you can combine courses into a training package that saves you money (specialties are as little as $93.00 -1/2 price) and you do not pay in advance. Pay as you learn. We will be posting a 2-month calendar in the Training Section to show all scheduled courses. Please note that we can offer any Specialty Diving Course available. If you have a particular course you'd like to take, let us know and we'll try to arrange it. We do need to have at least 6 participants.

'Save Our Shipwrecks' Flag Sticker
SOS (Save Our Shipwrecks) is an Ontario organization that's been working hard for many years to catalog and preserve Ontario's many shipwrecks. We have a wonderful wreck heritage that is really mostly appreciated and enjoyed by scuba divers. Any effort to promote and to save this heritage deserves the support of all divers. Scuba 2000 has a supply of a special dive flag sticker (3" X 8") that combines both the Canadian maple leaf and the diver's flag. It's very attractive as you can see from the attached image, it will identify you as a diver to all other divers and the proceeds of the sales of this sticker go to SOS. It isn't much ($2.50 each) but every dollar helps.

Vintage Scuba @ S2K
helmetScuba 2000 is special because we have an incredible resource in Alec's vintage gear collection. Not only is it considered one of the largest and finest anywhere but Alec shares his knowledge, experiences and his vintage equipment with anyone interested. Many of the items are very unique and a lot are extremely rare. In this spot each week, we'll feature a piece of scuba memorabilia whether scuba gear, personal gear, scuba diving accessories or maybe one of Alec's hundreds of scuba related items like Sea Hunt promotional pieces, movie posters, diving games and lots more. It's sure to interest you and many will amaze you

vintagesignalmarkerAnother very rare item from my collection of Sea Hunt memorabilia is this mint Sea Bed Marker complete with instructions, plastic Sea Hunt bag and box. What the heck is a Bed Marker? This device attached to your tank harness (no BCs then remember?) and could be released in an emergency to send a marker to the surface. The round yellow globe is very buoyant and there's 50'
of line on the reel. You could even twist the top so it showed a red insert before sending it up and that would alert the surface people that you were REALLY in trouble. I've not seen another one of these so
I have to believe it's quite rare. I've no idea of it's value but I suspect that a Sea Hunt aficionado would pay $150US at least for it. I would!

Just For Fun!!
Laughter is the Best Medicine for_fun
After being married for 44 years, I took a careful look at my wife one day and said, "Darling, 44 years ago we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10 inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 25-year-old girl. Now I have a $5000,000.00 home, a $45,000.000 car, a nice big bed and a plasma screen TV, but I'm sleeping with a 65-year-old woman. It seems to me that you're not holding up your side of things!"

My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 25-year-old gal, and she would make sure that I would once again living in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car, sleeping on a sofa bed and watching a 10 inch black and white TV.

Aren't older women great? They really know how to solve your mid-life crisis!!

Birthdays Are Great at Scuba 2000!!
cakeWe started having Scuba Splash Birthday Parties several years ago and they are now a regular feature of Friday evenings in our pool. We can take up to 9 guests and they enjoy a complete scuba diving introductory in the pool after which we have a party room, pizza, pop, birthday cake and prizes for everyone (have you heard Diana sing Happy Birthday?). Everyone simply loves it including the parents who often join in but who at least like the idea of not having a mess to clean up at home. Think about it and if someone you know is having a birthday, give us a call. By the way, it's not just for kids birthdays!!

Tip of the Week
lightbulbWe have lots of very experienced divers at S2K and they're happy to share their knowledge with all divers. We've arranged for these experts to give us one good 'Tip' in their area of expertise for each future issue of the What's News and you'll find it here. More categories may appear. If you have any questions, suggestions or arguments about these tips, direct them to the authors. Click on the contributor's name to send your feedback! We want to hear from you! Photography - by Tom Wilson award winning U/W Photographer

Monitor the number of shots you have remaining on a roll of film very carefully and try to leave a shot or two until the very end of the dive. You'd be surprised how many things there are to take photos of when doing a three minute safety stop (especially if you have no film left - Murphy's Law). Particularly in the tropics, when you are stationary like that can be when the fish find you the most approachable. (I find this particularly true of baracuda.)

Dive Travel - by Laurie Kennedy OWSI and World Diver

I have traveled to a variety of places around the world and each time I learn something new about land temperature versus water temperature. When traveling, do not assume because you are in a warmer climate and the land temperature is +30C that all you will need is a 3 mm wet suit. Make sure you research the water temperature at the destination and time of year you will be traveling. If you can, talk with someone who has been their before or the local dive operations to find out what they wear. Also, to be on the safe side, even if you dive using a 3 mm wet suite, it is always a good idea to bring along a hood or cap. My hood has certainly kept me warmer, longer on several occasions .... especially night diving!!

Instruction - by Jason R. Houle PADI Master Instructor

During the explanation of an exercise or scuba skill it is important to be clear with both your directions and gestures. Over the years I have seen newer instructors accurately demonstrate an exercise but students still have difficulty understanding what they are expected to do. I have found that terms like "do like this, not like this" seem to creep into the verbal discussion of an exercise. It is very important to describe exactly what you are doing with your hands or equipment. Some students may not be able to interpret what you mean.

For example: If you are asking the students to point the mouthpiece of the regulator down while performing a regulator remove and replace, be sure to describe it as such. If you simply hold the regulator out and say "do it like this" you may find a few students will hold the regulator an arm length from their body..

Skills and Safety - by Tyler Clair MSDT

In the past I have been asked about how to weight yourself properly for different diving situations. This is a detail not to be ignored as it will be key for you to enjoying you dive. For those of you who have not yet taken the 'advanced open diver' certification newly dubbed 'adventure diver' it should be high on your priority list. Contained in the adventure diver manual under the section of 'peek performance buoyancy' you will find a guide for weighting yourself properly for fresh or salt water as well as different thicknesses of exposure protection. This is a useful tool but to remember what you did to enjoy your dive so much write all the information in your log book so you have a quick reference on site to determine you optimum weighting.

Equipment - by Alec Peirce PADI Master Instructor

It's a common scenario in the pro shop - A diver comes in looking for a new mask and wants a black rubber one just like the one he's used with great success for 20 years. We notice he's also still using rubber Rocket fins and a thin, long rubber snorkel. No one will argue that's it's important to get comfortable and familiar with your scuba gear and that you should stick with what works best for you but - there have been great improvements in the materials and design of equipment in the last 5, 10 and certainly 20 years. Gear today is almost indestructible and is also designed with a great deal of research to work more efficiently and safely. Generally, the diver described above is at an age where, lightweight, efficient gear is becoming a necessity since he is no longer lightweight or efficient. Don't be afraid to try new gear. You might be surprised at how it can make your dives a lot more fun and safer too.
