Lots of Great Courses - Don't Miss Out!!
training_photo1Each month we offer several interesting scuba courses most of which give you PADI certification. You can complete the academics for each course here (usually 1 or 2 evenings) and then make the dives on your trip whether on a Scuba 2000 trip or on your own vacation. Watch for the following courses: U/W Navigation, U/W Naturalist, Night Diver, Boat Diver, U/W Photographer and lots more. Remember that you can combine courses into a training package that saves you money (specialties are as little as $93.00 -1/2 price) and you do not pay in advance. Pay as you learn. We will be posting a 2-month calendar in the Training Section to show all scheduled courses. Please note that we can offer any Specialty Diving Course available. If you have a particular course you'd like to take, let us know and we'll try to arrange it. We do need to have at least 6 participants.

'Save Our Shipwrecks' Flag Sticker
SOS (Save Our Shipwrecks) is an Ontario organization that's been working hard for many years to catalog and preserve Ontario's many shipwrecks. We have a wonderful wreck heritage that is really mostly appreciated and enjoyed by scuba divers. Any effort to promote and to save this heritage deserves the support of all divers. Scuba 2000 has a supply of a special dive flag sticker (3" X 8") that combines both the Canadian maple leaf and the diver's flag. It's very attractive as you can see from the attached image, it will identify you as a diver to all other divers and the proceeds of the sales of this sticker go to SOS. It isn't much ($2.50 each) but every dollar helps.

Vintage Scuba @ S2K
helmetScuba 2000 is special because we have an incredible resource in Alec's vintage gear collection. Not only is it considered one of the largest and finest anywhere but Alec shares his knowledge, experiences and his vintage equipment with anyone interested. Many of the items are very unique and a lot are extremely rare. In this spot each week, we'll feature a piece of scuba memorabilia whether scuba gear, personal gear, scuba diving accessories or maybe one of Alec's hundreds of scuba related items like Sea Hunt promotional pieces, movie posters, diving games and lots more. It's sure to interest you and many will amaze you.

In the early days of scuba we made a lot of our own gear. First no one could afford to buy new gear. Gosh a good mask was over $5!! Scuba regulators often cost $30 or more!! Plus there really wasn't much of a selection and besides, in the 50's, 60's and even the 70's, DIY (Do-it-yourself) was all the rage. It was a matter of pride if you used scuba gear that you had made!.
Here's a great example of a homemade underwater camera housing and it's one of the very best I've ever seen. Most were made of plastic glued together but this guy (it's not mine) actually made it from sheets of metal that he soldered together. The lens at the front and also the glass port at the back must have been very hard to fashion. Look at the neat accordion control. It was sealed shut on top with a flat rubber seal and 24 screws. Old camera housings don't always get a lot of money at vintage auctions. Homemade housings don't do well either but I'd guess this one is unique and very high quality and might be worth $250 US.

Birthdays Are Great at Scuba 2000!!
cakeWe started having Scuba Splash Birthday Parties several years ago and they are now a regular feature of Friday evenings in our pool. We can take up to 9 guests and they enjoy a complete scuba diving introductory in the pool after which we have a party room, pizza, pop, birthday cake and prizes for everyone (have you heard Diana sing Happy Birthday?). Everyone simply loves it including the parents who often join in but who at least like the idea of not having a mess to clean up at home. Think about it and if someone you know is having a birthday, give us a call. By the way, it's not just for kids birthdays!!

Tip of the Week
lightbulbWe have lots of very experienced divers at S2K and they're happy to share their knowledge with all divers. We've arranged for these experts to give us one good 'Tip' in their area of expertise for each future issue of the What's News and you'll find it here. More categories may appear. If you have any questions, suggestions or arguments about these tips, direct them to the authors. Click on the contributor's name to send your feedback! We want to hear from you! Many first-time underwater photographers try to get as many pictures as they can on every dive and they usually end up with a couple of good shots but lots of poor ones. Unfortunately, unless they change their techniques that pattern will continue. As quickly as possible you must exercise some discipline and stop chasing pictures. Pick a spot on the reef or wreck and concentrate on taking lots of pictures of the same subject from different perspectives, distances and varying light sources. If you take notes about each picture, you'll soon begin to notice a pattern that yields the best results. Concentrate on that pattern and you'll soon be in National Geographic.

Many couples are planning a ‘dream destination wedding’. For many reasons: avoiding hassles with family members, parents that are divorced, a life long dream, the rising cost of weddings here at home, etc., etc. Whatever the reasons, check out the legal side of things first. The web site www.lovetripper.com lists basic requirements for getting married in exotic destinations.
Here are a few tips to help with the planning:

· Use your credit card to pay wedding expenses. In the event a merchant fails to deliver, you can use your credit card company to dispute the charges.

· Peak tourist months and holidays may affect your ability to reach the destination of choice, increase the length of time for booking, increase the cost and increase the number of other tourists at your dream destination.

· Save money and headaches by keeping the party small. When you return home hold an informal reception for those who could not attend. It’s a great time to share video and photos of the ceremony.

Is your passport and ID in your maiden name or married name? To avoid hassles be sure you book your airline reservations in the appropriate name.
Let the hotel know ahead of time that you are newly married. Honeymooners often enjoy perks such as champagne and room upgrades.

Being too fast can be just as bad as being too slow! Recently when a class finished early, the new divers were frustrated hanging around for their turn to go in the pool. As their frustration grew, they began to worry that maybe they had missed something because their course did not take the allotted time! If you’re fast in the class, have a video or a written trivia quiz on scuba to use. In the pool, always have a couple of games or additional exercises that use their new skills. Pool time is the most crucial and must not be wasted.

Don't get diving as much as you'd like? (who does?) Worried about forgetting some important dive skills? Plan to take a scuba course every year. A single specialty course will keep you in touch with the store and other divers. You'll have an opportunity to practice your skills in the pool and then again in open water. Plus, you'll learn something new too. If you can't get away for a dive trip every year, at least learn something and keep in touch.

Equipment - by This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it PADI Master Instructor
One of our divers was in the store the other day to buy a new dive light. He had stored his light with the batteries inside only to find that they had leaked gas and exploded! Obviously he doesn't read the Equipment Tips in the What's News. Luckily nothing else was damaged. The acid and goo from the exploded batteries would have permanently damaged his suit, regulator, BC or anything else it touched. The moral of this story is : don’t leave batteries inside your dive light, camera or computer for long periods. If you don't take this advise at least don't leave your battery powered stuff inside your crowded dive bag.
